Special Education Services
Lake Forest School District 67 provides a full continuum of services and placement for students, ages three through fourteen found eligible to receive special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Lake Forest School District 67 coordinates and maintains specific referral, evaluation, programming, and placement procedures. Special education and related services for IDEA-eligible students are provided as outlined within a student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
Students eligible for special education and related services under the IDEA may be served within various educational settings. The continuum of services and placements includes, but is not limited to, support in the general education environment, special education resource and instructional courses, or other public or private special education schools approved by the Illinois State Board of Education to serve students with disabilities, as well as related services that students may require to benefit from their special education. Public funds will pay for the child’s tuition to a public or private special education school only if it is determined as being appropriate, in the least restrictive environment, and is on the state of Illinois approved list.
Care is taken to use evidence-based instructional materials and skill development is frequently progress monitored. The department endorses a partnership philosophy with parents and encourages them to be active members of their child’s educational team.
If the parents disagree with the Individual Educational Program proposed for their child or are dissatisfied with his/her present placement, or have been denied any of their rights, they have the right to an impartial due process hearing. The Illinois State Board of Education appoints an impartial hearing officer to hear both sides and renders a recommendation to the local education agency.
What is an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)?
An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a written plan that outlines the services and support a school will provide to a student with a disability. The goal of an IEP is to ensure that the student receives the specialized instruction and related services they need to succeed in school.
Request for an IEP Evaluation
Any parent, staff member, or student may request an evaluation to determine a student’s potential eligibility for special education services. Written requests should be directed to the student’s teacher or building principal. Additional information is available by contacting the Director of Student Services, Ms. JoAnn Ford Halvorsen at jfordhalvorsen@lfschools.net.
Special Education Eligibility
Students of the District may be found eligible for special education services under the following categories: Autism, Deaf-Blindness, Deafness, Emotional Disability, Hearing Impaired, Intellectual Disability, Multiple Disabilities, Orthopedic Impairment, Other Health Impairment, Specific Learning Disability, Speech or Language Impairment, Traumatic Brain Injury, Visual Impairment, and Developmental Delay.
Annual Review Meeting
Parents will be invited to participate in an annual review of their child’s Individual Educational Program (IEP). If the parents’ or child’s primary language is not English, an interpreter and translated documents may be provided if requested.
District 67 offers a full continuum of services/programming, psychological services, social work, speech therapy services, and related services to eligible students.
Reevaluation
Every three years students with special education services are entitled to a reevaluation. The purpose of this evaluation is to determine the effectiveness of current services, make changes to goal(s), modify services and accommodations, and determine continued eligibility for special education. A reevaluation may be required sooner if:
- A parent or teacher requests it.
- The IEP team determines it’s necessary to address educational needs.
- The IEP team is considering ending the student’s special education services.
- The student moves out of state and additional information is needed.
Partnerships
